Featured Artist: Iggy Pop

iggyMy father in law hates Iggy Pop.

Growing up right across the river from Detroit, in Windsor, ON he had many chances to see Iggy perform during his youth. He’s recounted stories of performances in his high school gym where Iggy was so messed up that he cut himself all up on stage and another time when he solicited sex amongst the audience. Of course my father in laws tastes aren’t really in the punk vein where Iggy dwells either…he’s more of a classic rock guy. Fact is Iggy was punk before there was punk. He’s been doing it since the 60’s, which blows my mind.

I like Iggy Pop.

While some of his later stuff, particularly the David Bowie inspired period (I’m talking to you China Girl), is horrible. The bulk of Iggy’s material is great. I love tracks like “No Fun”, “Search & Destroy”, “Gimme Danger” and of course ”I Wanna Be Your Dog”. But the song that stands out to me as of late is “I’m Sick of You”. It starts out slow and builds into a fabulous Iggy frenzy and back again. Great songs and the foresight to become a punk vanguard before punk even really existed (whether it was on purpose or whether he was just a noisy crappy musician is up for debate) are reasons why Iggy Pop is my featured artist for today.
