Rip The Ripper!
Any kid who grew up in the 80′s and skateboarded in any capacity has come in contact with the Ripper. You either had the shirt or the sticker, maybe even the deck. It’s an iconic part of skate culture and in my opinion the greatest skate graphic of all time, remaining a top skate graphic since it’s creation in ’78…along with many of Vernon Courtlandt Johnson‘s other creations like the Tony Hawk chicken skull and the Ray “Bones” Rodriguez skull dagger graphic.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of VCJ’s Ripper, Powell-Peralta invited a group of 50 artists to offer their take on this classic image. The result was the Rip the Ripper Art Show, featuring art and skate heavyweights like Lance Mountain, Michael Sieben, Todd Bratrud and Steve Caballero to name a few.
Check out the entire show at the Powell-Peralta website, and experience a chapter in skateboarding and art history.
