Love Letter is a series of over 50 murals completed by the artist (with the aide of other artists) in partnership with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, in what has been described as a love letter to the city, all over the city. The murals feature typical Espo themes and typographic flair, beautifying the reputedly downtrodden city of brotherly love. We can only dream that one day an artist would take up residence here in Calgary and throw down a project of this scale. But then again, Calgary doesn’t have the same street cred as Philly…so keep dreaming nice dreams.

A graffiti mural was set to liven up Shaw Millenium Park, and mentor young artists over the next few months. Instead it’s become a giant PR nightmare for the City of Calgary, who supplied that paint (but not the proper supervision and guidelines) that was subsequently used to vandalize most of the park. Downtown Alderman John Mar (pictured) is calling for blood after touring the site yesterday. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and if the project will ever go on as intended, or if the budget will be eaten up with what’s sure to be a hefty clean up bill.

Twitter user @RyanPopowich probably sums it up best:
City gives skate-punks spray paint. Skate-punks spray paint the shit out of skatepark with F-Bombs. Wow, did not see that one coming

You have to feel for Dave Brunning (a great local graffiti artist), who helped to coordinate this project with the purest intentions, but sadly it looks like this is only going to end up pushing back street art as a legitimate artform in Calgary. It’s always been an uphill battle cleaning up graffiti’s public image: now it’s clear all it takes is a few bad apples, and some really bad planning by the City for things to go completely south.

There’s a fantastic looking skateboard art show travelling across Canada right now (Calgary September 4-6 at Livestock) called “Smile On Your Brother”.

Conceived by Mike Giles and Annie Lam and co-curated by Bob Kronbauer of www.clubmumble.com fame, “Smile On Your Brother” , is an art show centered around the original shape of skateboards when they first hit mass production. This seemed the perfect canvas to launch the contributor campaign. The idea behind not only the show, but also overall project is to hopefully inspire people to think about their first skateboard and what it meant to them. For many skaters, this still represents a pivotal moment in their lives, with every last little detail, fresh in their minds. Bringing together contemporary artists both in, and affected by the skateboard industry to help raise funds to go towards the first goal of Contributor which is to donate 100 skateboards to disadvantaged youth across Canada in 2009/2010

There’s some real heavy hitters in this one such as Don Pendleton (pictured), Travis Millard, Mel Kadel, Andy Jenkins, Jim Houser, Parra, and Porous Walker among many others. Be sure to check it out, as we rarely get the opportunity to see this kind of artistic talent come across Canada. Plus all pieces are available for purchase with proceeds going to the Contributor cause. Good stuff.

For more information visit: Smile On Your Brother @ Contributor
